Why Strength Training Is Non Negotiable For Women Over 40

If you're over 40, you've probably noticed things changing. Maybe it's a bit more effort to shift weight than it used to be. Maybe your energy dips differently. Maybe you've started hearing the word "menopause" a lot more, even if you're not quite there yet.

Here's something that doesn't get talked about enough: from your thirties onwards, we naturally start to lose muscle mass, and that loss speeds up significantly around perimenopause and menopause as oestrogen declines. We can lose somewhere between three and eight percent of our muscle mass per decade after 30, and that rate accelerates from 40 onwards. Alongside that, bone density starts to decline too, which is exactly why so many women start to worry about osteoporosis in their fifties and sixties.

The good news is that this isn't something you just have to accept. Strength training is one of the most powerful tools we have to fight back against it, and the research backs this up again and again.

What strength training actually does for you

It protects your bones. Weight bearing and resistance work stimulates bone density, which matters enormously as we head towards and through menopause when the risk of osteoporosis rises sharply.

It protects your metabolism. Muscle is metabolically active tissue. The more you have, the more efficiently your body burns energy, even at rest. This is a big part of why maintaining muscle becomes so important for managing weight and energy levels as we age.

It protects your independence. This one matters more than people think. Strength training keeps you capable, able to carry your shopping, get up off the floor easily, keep up with your kids or grandkids, and stay steady on your feet. That's not vanity, that's quality of life for the next forty years.

It supports how you feel day to day. Many women tell us that strength work has changed how they feel in their body more than any other type of exercise, helping with mood, sleep and confidence, especially through the hormonal shifts of perimenopause and menopause.

Why gentle isn't always the goal

There's a common myth that as we get older we should be doing less, going lighter, taking it easier. For cardiovascular health and joint mobility, gentle movement absolutely has its place. But when it comes to building and protecting muscle, your body needs a genuine challenge. It needs to be asked to do something it currently can't quite do, so it adapts and gets stronger. This is called progressive overload, and it's the single most important principle in building real, lasting strength.

Working to near failure, meaning your muscles are properly fatigued by the end of a set, isn't scary or extreme. It's simply how muscle is built, at any age.

Introducing Strength at STUDIO FORMA, from September

This is exactly why we've been working on something new. From September, STUDIO FORMA is introducing Strength classes, designed specifically to bring genuine progressive overload into your Pilates practice.

These sessions combine heavier dumbbells and heavier springs than our usual reformer classes, with the goal of properly challenging your muscles and building real strength over time, not just toning or maintaining. You'll still get all the control, precision and low impact benefits that make Pilates so good for your joints, but with the intensity dialled up so your body has a genuine reason to build muscle. Working in 6 week blocks you will be able to progress through the weights and springs each week to build muscle effectively.

We built these classes because we believe in giving our community, women who are navigating exactly this stage of life, the tools that actually make a difference for the decades ahead, not just the next six weeks.

Keep an eye out for the full timetable and booking details coming soon. We can't wait to get stronger with you. Go to our timetable for more info.
